Things have changed a lot for solar in just the last few years. There was the solar boom of 2009 when the Sonoma County Energy Independence Program was handing out cash for just about any homeowner that wanted to go solar. Dozens of contractors flooded the market looking to profit quick and fill the needs of the solar hungry. Some companies from out of state even sent teams of canvassers into neighborhoods. Then, as the rules and regulations tightened, the easy financing decreased, and the darkening economy caught up to the solar industry, many of these new Solar contractors simply closed their doors.
Fast forward to 2012 and you have what seems to be two options if you want to go solar. Who’s left? What companies made it through the toughest economic years? Lets start with the “big guys”. The ones backed buy millions and millions of investor funds. They market state wide or even nationally. They have large turn over of sales people and a cookie cutter approach to a custom solar installation. Also left are what I like to call the “local guys”. The small to medium sized companies that got creative, made changes and made it happen. Some expanded product lines offering more than just solar. Some focused on commercial government funded projects when residential sales were down. However it happened, they should be celebrated and congratulated because it was tougher than most people outside the solar industry realize. During those tough times, the “big guys” backed by millions of investor funds could and did take losses on large scale projects just to gain market share and name.
Luckily for the “local guys” there has been a grass roots movement toward all things LOCAL. You see the signs on truck, businesses and just about everywhere to keep your hard earned dollars GO LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL and BE LOCAL. Bring back the economy and start in your backyard! At both Gaia Energy Systems and The Sun Connection we are proud to be the LOCALS for the solar industry. We are excited to announce our joint effort to provide exceptional Solar products and support.
